Living Longer in your Own Home

Senior careBy far most of the people I speak with who are facing their senior years would prefer to do so in the place they call home. Moving house is stressful at the best of times. Add to that the stress of an aging body and a mind that may not be as agile as it used to be and who wouldn’t prefer to leave well enough alone?

There are three directions from which the pressure will come;

  • One is Physical

Can you mange the tasks involved in maintaining your home? Does your home have features that help you move about easily and safely? Can you manage the tasks involved in maintaining yourself- the so called activities of daily living (ADLs)?

  • Second is Social

Has you home become an island of isolation? Do you have a support system in place (family and friends) to help you stay involved in your community?

  • Third is Financial

Can you afford to hire the help you need to maintain your home, as well as managing ongoing maintenance costs, property taxes, insurance etc.? Is needed, can you afford to hire help to assist you in dressing, personal hygiene and meal preparation?

The Good News is there is a lot of help out there to enable people to deal with these pressures. One of the advantages of the swelling population of people over the age of 55 is that both government and private industry are paying attention to the needs of seniors. Please call me to learn more.
